Website: The Educational Society For Resource Management (APICS)
APICS is a professional association founded in 1957 to provide members with education and due accreditation in resource management. Reflecting changes in application the official name is The Association for Operations Management, but it is still often thought of as The American Production and Inventory Control Society because of its initial focus. Operations Research, employing mathematical modeling, was one of the driving forces in professionalization and being developed on Navy Finance Center computers. It was only natural that logistics, a major concern of the navy, would be included as well - and later further impelled by Just In Time materials management systems that had to account for the distribution time and cost aspects of minimizing inventories. Most recently aspects of operationally and environmentally sound "green" business practices are being reviewed.
APICS membership is open to professionals, students and enterprises and organizes geographically into local chapters and regional districts in addition to direct international members. There is an annual conference and are numerous topical workshops and webinars, these latter geared towards gaining and maintaining certification. In addition APICS operates its Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation to increase and broaden the knowledge base available to members so they can keep abreast of developments.
