Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is a professional association founded in 1880 to establish and promote higher standards and practices in the development of mechanical devices, objects and machines. Initially, the primary focus was to ensure the reliable and safe performance of steam boilers, and many of these specifications became part of the legal code. The advent of the internal combustion engine and electro-mechanical devices lead ASME to encompass interdisciplinary approaches, and this continues today in regard to the interface with bio-engineering, electronics, and nano-scale devices. The sheer mass and diversity of mechanical devices in the everyday world offers never ending challenges for
physical characterization and functional assessment.
ASME offers the opportunity for collegial cooperation through geographical districts and local sections; and national technical divisions and groups. It requires experience and/or education in the engineering field, generally anticipating a college engineering degree. However, the avenue to membership is open to those employed in an engineering field with 8 years of service. One of the legacies of it's founding is the adoption of its standards as legal codes and has developed a set of code stamps as the means of communicating these standards. ASME supports the building of the knowledge base through its institutes and disseminates the information through numerous publications, conferences and courses. In addition it tests members for certification in selected fields of application.
