SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) is a professional association, founded in 1932, and dedicated to advancing manufacturing capabilities - through training, technology and systemic improvement.

Much has changed from that time. Material removal tolerances of thousandths have given way to tolerances of microns; and additive material technologies have dropped from the thicknesses measured during plating operations to material deposition at nanometer scales. Likewise, systems that once aspired to one in a thousand defects now target and attain six-sigma levels of reliability. Piling up inventories for contingencies has yielded to flexible manufacturing processes dropping in process and finished goods on hand to nearly zero.

SME balances national technical communities with local chapters to provide meetings and events with both a focused knowledge base and diverse operating styles. This combination of depth experience and breadth of exposure creates opportunities to borrow from the best practice available in improving manufacturing operations. Likewise, the awareness of difficulties in process improvement adds perspective, patience and perseverance to efforts that reach fruition only after lengthy painstaking work.
